Everyone loves having the extended video real estate that comes with having dual screen monitors. Unfortunately this modern convenience is not without its technical issues. Below are a list of solutions to help you if your screens suddenly go blank, but your computer seems to be working just fine. One of or a combination of these solutions can solve your problem. Please be patient and walk through the solutions. They will not take much time.
Check the cable connected to your computer from your dock. It is magnetic and can sometimes stick to the side of the comptuer but not connect in the right slot. Remove the cable and reset it making sure it connects properly. If its connected properly you should see a small white light on the connector.
It is very easy for the cables to come loose or fall out of the monitors. Check on the back of the monitors to make sure the HDMI cable and the power cables for the screens has not come unplugged. If they have come unplugged, gently plug them in. If not make sure the monitors are powered on. When not receiving a signal they can turn off. Find the power button on the screen (maybe on the back or on the bottom of the screen) and turn them on.
Also check to make sure the cables are also connected to the Surface Dock on your desk.
On your keyboard you will find a key in the lower left that looks like four squares making a larger square. This is the Windows short key button. It can launch numerous tools when pressed with a corresponding key. A list of those commands can be found here. For this purpose you need to press the Windows key and the letter P. This will bring up the presentation display settings. Using two screens is just like projecting. So you will need to make sure your computer is presentating properly. Win+P cycles through multiple choices:
PC screen only
Duplicate
Extend
Second screen only
You want Extend.
The Surface Dock doesn't have a power button, but you can restart it by unplugging the power cord from the back and plugging it back in. This will reset the dock and reconnect your screens.
Most computer issues go away with just a simple restart of your computer. In the case of a dual screen failure the issue may involve a failure of the video drivers. To reset the video driver, press and hold the power button on your computer until it reboots. Avoid swiping on the screen when asked to do so and continue holding the button for 20-30 seconds. This will complete a full reset of the drivers. Let go of the power button when you see the Window's logo on the screen.
On the Surface Pro the power button is on the side of the computer. On the Surface Laptop it is in the upper right hand corner of the keyboard.
When all else fails, carefully disconnect the monitors and power cables (so that they don't spring the monitors back at you), lift the stand off the table, and throw it across the room. Do not aim for people, walls or anything else that looks expensive. If you want to take it outside and smash it with a blunt object, please let the IT department know so a cart can be made available for transport.
