You can create assignments and distribute those to students through Google Classroom. You can also collect and grade these assignments through Google Classroom. The steps below will show you how to create the assignment, receive finished work from students, and grade it all on your device.
Go to the Classwork section of Google Classroom
For this example we are going to create an Assignment. Choose Assignment.
Give the Assignment a Title and fill in the instructions as needed. Assign it for the correct periods. Give it a points total. Set a due date. This will appear in the students and your Google Calendar under the calendar for the class. If you have topics set up place it under the correct topic. If you are using a rubric add it here.
Unlimited originality reports are available under the Check plagiarism check box.
You can add attachments by clicking the Add icon. You can add anything from Google Drive, a web hyperlink, any file from your device, or a link from YouTube.
When you add an item you must set the sharing permissions. They are:
Students all view the same single file.
Students all view and can edit the same single file.
Each individual student gets their own copy in Drive.
Since we want the students to turn in a worksheet we will choose the last option.
Once you have inserted a document, and filled in all the other information you can assign the document using the button in the upper right.
You have the ability to assign immediately, schedule for the future, save the draft or discard the draft.
Once assigned you will see the assignment in the Stream and in the classwork page. It will tell you how many students the assignment is assigned to and how many have been turned in.
Clicking on assigned will take you to student work page. Here you will see who as turned in what, and which grades they have received. You can also clicked on turned in assignments to grade them.
To effectively grade work on your device, students must turn in their assignments as PDFs. This is easy if they use their iPad to work on the assignment. Making changes to the file you gave them, then saving it in Classroom automatically creates a PDF. They must then turn that PDF with changes into you.
When an assignment is completed and turned in you will see the student work page change to show a turned in assignment and an image of the student's work.
To grade the work you need to click on the students assignment to open the Google Assignments window. From here you can grade all the student's work. To make sure you can cleanly draw on the PDF you need to make sure the Kami extension is installed on chrome.
If Kami is not installed. Open a new tab in Chrome. Search for Kami Extension Chrome. Open the link for the Chrome Web Store and click add to Chrome. Kami has a pay version and a free version. You can use the free version since it has all the tools you need.
You may need to refresh the tab open in Google Assignments to activate Kami.
Once back in the Assignments page check the box next to Grade with Kami and then Authorize Kami to use your Google Drive. You will have to answer a few questions from Kami before you can access the basic plan.
Close the assignment and open it again to continue.
Kami gives you a lot of tools to grade. The one you should be most focused on is the paint brush tool. It will allow you to write on the document. There is also a text box to type in.
Google Assignments gives you a space for private comments as well as way to add create a comment bank to use with multiple students.
When finished grading in Kami clock the save icon to save your changes. A drop down with options will appear. Choose Save Now.
When you have finished grading and gave the assignment a number grade. You can return it to students.
The arrow next to the return button allows you to return this submission or all the submissions that have been turned in. You can grade more submissions by choosing the dropdown arrow next to the students name at the top of the assignment page.
Once the work has been graded and returned you will see a change on the student work page to show the assignment has been graded. The student can resubmit any work if you wish them to do so.
